BASIC NIB CARE & TUNING – Registration Required!

Do you want to learn how to diagnose and smooth problem nibs? Learn from Nib worker Mr. Sunny Koh with hands-on instruction on pen maintenance, nib diagnostics, and simple repairs and smoothing. Learn how a pen and nib work, how to use a loupe to diagnose problems, understand perfect nib geometry, test ink flow using Japanese techniques, tine alignment and flow adjustment, and nib smoothing using the Binderize Method.

Sunny Koh provides participants with a complete, specialized kit including a jewelry loupe, sample ink vial, and tuning and smoothing mediums to use during the class and take home afterward.

Students should bring a few cheap or problem fountain pens they don't mind experimenting on, plus a small pad of their preferred fountain-pen-friendly paper to test how the nib behaves under their normal writing pressure and angle.

COPPERPLATE CALLIGRAPHY - Registration Required!

Learn the beautiful calligraphic style of copperplate script! Copperplate calligraphy is also known as roundhand, engrosser's, and engraver's script. We will cover a concise history and learn to use dip pens to form the basic strokes of its construction. The course is geared towards beginners, but those with more experience are encouraged to attend as a refresher.

All tools (nibs, holders, papers, handouts) are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own supplies if you wish. You should bring a pencil and ruler to the class.

Join Hong Nguyen (MASTER PENMAN) for a fun exploration of Novelty Writing—creative and unexpected ways to make the written word more interesting, personal, and memorable.

With the holidays approaching, handwritten cards, greetings, and notes offer a wonderful opportunity to make your words stand out. In this one-hour seminar, Hong will introduce several unusual writing techniques, including cross writing, backward writing, landscape writing, and other novelty styles that add an element of surprise and personality to an otherwise simple handwritten message.

You don’t need to learn a formal calligraphic hand or change your everyday handwriting. Instead, you’ll discover playful ways to use the handwriting you already have and to create something distinctive and fun.
